McDonald’s is planning a shake-up of its Penrith drive-through in a bid to get customers served faster and help stop queues backing onto Ullswater Road.
The fast-food chain has submitted plans to Westmorland and Furness Council to rearrange the car park and move its ordering facilities, creating side-by-side lanes where two drivers can order at once.
For motorists often held up by cars queuing to get into the drive-through beside Penrith railway station, the changes could bring some relief. The aim is to keep customers moving through the site more quickly, cutting the build-up of vehicles at busy times.
McDonald’s says the extra ordering point would help shorten queues and allow the restaurant to deal with the rush without sending staff outside to take orders from waiting drivers.
Making room for the revised drive-through would mean changing the car park layout, moving kerbs and putting in a new traffic island. Existing signs and a digital ordering booth would be relocated, with another digital booth screen added for the second ordering lane.
The chain is also seeking permission for an additional freestanding sign and two banner units as part of the changes.
The Ullswater Road restaurant has been serving customers since August 2000. Its position opposite Penrith Castle and beside the railway station puts it within the town’s conservation area, although agents acting for McDonald’s say the alterations would have little effect on the appearance of the site or its historic surroundings.
