Drivers forced to make right turn into Middlegate as Duke Street closed for United Utilities works

Drivers travelling down Brunswick Road in Penrith today are being forced to make a right turn at the traffic lights into Middlegate as roadworks on Duke Street have closed the road to traffic.

The closure, which is being carried out by contractors working for United Utilities, leaves motorists travelling down Brunswick Road with little option but to turn right into Middlegate when they reach the closure.

The turn is not the normal route for traffic coming down Brunswick Road, but with the road ahead closed, drivers are being left to make the manoeuvre across oncoming traffic heading up Brunswick Road.

Motorists heading down Brunswick Road have little advance warning as they approach the closure. A sign has been placed part-way down Brunswick Road, but drivers travelling down the hill have already committed to the route by the time they reach the point where the closure becomes apparent.

The resulting traffic movement has seen vehicles turning right into Middlegate across oncoming traffic, creating an unusual traffic arrangement at the junction.

Contractors at the site have told drivers that the works have been permitted by Westmorland and Furness Council, which issued the permits covering the work and the closure required for it to take place.

The works are being carried out on Duke Street by United Utilities contractors, with the temporary closure required to allow the work to be undertaken.

Drivers approaching the area are being urged to take care, particularly around the temporary arrangements at the junction with Middlegate.
