Penrith Town Council has installed a new a new solar powered Speed Indicator Device known as a Sid on Oak Road. The Town Council agreed to fund the costs of the installation and ongoing maintenance of a new Speed Indicator Device on Oak Road earlier this year having previously installed similar devices on Bridge Lane and Beacon Edge.
Each SiD costs almost £5000 plus installation and ongoing maintenance costs.
The location for the new SiD was identified following reports of on-going speeding issues and following liaison with the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership (CRSP) who had verified data available to them and agreed that it was a suitable location.
On Thursday 31 October, Cllr. Scott Jackson, Chair of the Council's Planning Committee visited the newly installed Speed Indicator Device and said:
"The safety of our residents is paramount - and addressing speeding concerns on Oak Road has been identified as an issue for local residents.
"I am pleased that the Council's Planning Committee were able to agree on taking this proactive approach which I am sure is already being received gladly by residents."
The speed indicator device shows the speed of vehicles travelling toward it along with a message depending on the vehicle speed. The device can also record speeds but not vehicle details.
