Third Time Lucky - Northern Lights Forecast Again Tonight

We could be in for another spectacular light show tonight (Sunday 22nd March) as the Northern Lights are expected to make a third appearance over Penrith and the North this evening.

After skies across the UK were illuminated in stunning shades of green and purple on Friday and Saturday night, forecasters say conditions remain highly favourable for another display on Sunday (22 March).

The recent activity has been driven by a powerful solar flare earlier this week, which sent a burst of charged particles towards Earth. This has led to a significant increase in geomagnetic activity, now rated at G3 (strong), creating ideal conditions for the aurora borealis to be visible much further south than usual.

AuroraWatch UK has issued a red alert, indicating that auroral sightings are highly likely across Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland — with again Cumbria firmly in the viewing zone.

Many across the region were treated to amazing views over the past two nights, with the skies glowing in vibrant colours. With solar wind speeds still elevated, experts believe there is a strong chance the display could continue tonight.

Forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Met Office confirm that the ongoing effects of a coronal mass ejection (CME) are continuing to interact with Earth’s magnetic field, sustaining the conditions needed for auroral activity.

Encouragingly for local stargazers, cloud cover across the north of England is expected to remain relatively low overnight, improving the chances of clear views.

The best time to catch the Northern Lights is expected to be between approximately 11pm on Sunday and 2am on Monday morning.

Those hoping to catch a glimpse are advised to head to darker areas away from street lighting, look north, and allow time for their eyes to adjust. Even if the lights appear faint to the naked eye, smartphone cameras may still capture the display vividly.

If you missed the display over the last two nights, tonight could be the perfect opportunity to witness one of nature’s most magical phenomena by stepping outside into your back garden tonight.
