The A66 is closed in both directions between the A6 at Penrith and the A685 at Brough due to a collision.

The A66 in Cumbria is closed in both directions between the A6 at Penrith and the A685 at Brough following a serious collision near Warcop shortly before 04:30 this morning.

Cumbria Police are leading the response, supported by National Highways service partners. The road remains closed to protect the scene and allow police to carry out detailed collision investigation work.

The closure is expected to remain in place throughout the morning. 

What happens next

Following serious road traffic collisions, police are required to undertake formal collision investigations at the scene. National Highways supports this work by providing traffic management, and the duration of these investigations can vary depending on the complexity and scale of the scene. 

Diversion Routes

Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the solid square diversion route symbol:

  • At the M6 J40 roundabout take the exit on the M6 southbound towards Tebay. 
  • Exit the M6 at J38 (Tebay)
  • At the roundabout take the exit onto the A685 heading north-east towards Kirkby Stephen.
  • Follow the A685 back to the A66 eastbound at Brough and re-join the A66 eastbound to continue your journey. 

Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the solid triangle on road signs: 

  • Exit the A66 at the A685 Brough junction. 

  • Turn left onto the A685 southwards to Kirkby Stephen and westwards to Tebay. 

  • Join M6 northbound at Jct. 38 (Tebay)

  • Exit at J40 (Penrith) to re-join the A66 .

Please note both diversion routes include a low bridge with a maximum vehicle height of 14 feet 6 inches. Vehicles above this height should divert via the A69.
