A Petition demanding fresh election will be debated in Parliament on the 6th of January as numbers signing tops 2.8 million
The Westminster Petitions Committee has announced that the call will be considered in the Westminster Hall chamber on the 6th of January.
The chair of the Petitions Committee Libdem MP Jamie Stone will lead the debate. However, under procedural rules it will be on a 'neutral' motion and the debate and motion will not trigger a new General Election.
The petition on the Parliament petition website was started pub owner Michael Westwood who complained that Keir Starmer has 'gone back on promises' made in the election campaign.
The petition has received 5,876 signatures so far in the Penrith and Solway Constituency reflecting 6.04% of the total 97,200 electorate in the constituency. In the July General Election a total of 49,281 voted in the constituency with Markus Campbell-Savours elected as the MP with 19,986 votes and a 5,257 majority.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out calling another general election, but said he is “not surprised” some people who did not support Labour might want a second poll.
