Shouts of "shame" could be heard in the House of Commons chamber as the result of the vote on winter fuel payments was announced this afternoon.
The vote was held on a conservative motion to stop the government plans to cut the winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners but was defeated by 348 to 228 votes - a majority of 120.
The parliamentary record of votes shows, Penrith and Solway MP Labour’s Markus Campbell-Savours voted against the Conservative motion that would have stopped the Government cutting payments to millions of pensioners this winter and instead voting to supported the government plans to cut winter fuel allowance going ahead for pensioners across Penrith and Solway and the UK in line with almost all other Labour MP’s.
The government cuts will not go ahead and means that from this winter only those claiming pension credit or other means-tested benefits will receive help with their fuel bills, previously the allowance was available to anyone over the age of 66.
The move is expected to reduce the number of pensioners in receipt of the up to £300 payment by 10 million, from approximately 11.4 million with around only 1.5 million pensioners able to access the winter fuel support payments.
