Penrith Councillor Quits Lib Dem Group to Become an Independent

A councillor has quit Westmorland and Furness Council’s ruling Liberal Democrat group to become an Independent councillors for the Penrith South Ward.

Cllr Mike Eyles was elected at the May 2022 local elections to represent the Penrith South ward, which includes Castletown Wetheriggs and Pategill areas of the town.

Cllr Eyes was a councillor and cabinet member of the former Eden district council having served as a Libdem councillor for over a decade on Eden Council.

Cllr Eyes departure from the Libdems comes just weeks after a by election was held to fill the second vacant seat for the ward following the resignation of another former Libdem councillor in January.

In a statement, Councillor Eyles said: “He was not going to go into details over his change to an independent councillor, but he would continue to serve the ward as the councillor”.

Cllr Eyles currently serves as the vice chair of the Eden Area planning committee along with serving on Westmorland and Furness Councils Licensing Committee, Licensing Sub-Committee, Regulatory Committee, Regulatory Sub-Committee and the councils Strategic Planning Committee as a Reserve member of the committee.

Cllr Eyles joined a group opposing the councils £60 green bin charge today outside Voreda House following a walk through Penrith with green wheelie bins.
