Penrith and Solway MP Markus Campbell-Savours has this week formally resigned as a councillor for Keswick ward on Cumberland Council where he also served as an executive member on the new council.
Mr Campbell-Savours was elected as a Labour MP for the new Penrith and Solway parliamentary constituency in the July general election but was also elected in May 2022 as a then shadow councillor for Cumberland Council for the Keswick ward until the changes in local government in April last year.
The resignation means a by-election will be held in the ward later this year to elect a new councillor.
Since his election as MP on the morning of July 5, Mr Campbell-Savours stopped the Cumberland Council from paying him his £29,000 councillor allowance that included the basic councillors allowance and executive portfolio allowance. Cumberland Council have also confirmed they stopped payments and he has attended no meetings of the council since his election as MP.
As an MP, Mr Campbell-Savours has swap his councillor allowances for the basic annual salary of a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons that is currently £91,346, plus expenses.
The resignation leaves residents and businesses in the ward with no councillor until a by election is held by Cumberland Council to fill the vacant seat expected to cost the council approximately £10,000 to hold.
