A Mercedes driver ended up spending the night in police custody after crashing into a hedge just outside Penrith at Stainton, while more than twice the legal drink-drive limit.
Cumbria Police said the man had got behind the wheel despite being heavily intoxicated before crashing his Mercedes into a hedge near the village.
Fortunately, nobody was reported to have been injured in the crash, but things could have ended very differently.
The driver was breathalysed following the crash and provided a reading more than twice the legal alcohol limit before being taken into custody for the night.
Police have hit out at the driver's actions, warning that getting behind the wheel after drinking puts innocent lives at risk.
In a blunt message to motorists, Cumbria Police said: "Don't be like this male. Selfish actions like this put innocent road users at risk of serious harm."
Officers added that they were thankful the incident had not ended with a much more serious outcome.
