Markus Campbell-Savours - Labour, has been elected as MP for Penrith and Solway giving Penrith its first ever Labour MP with Penrith having been held by the Conservatives since the 1931 General Election as part of the Penrith and Cockermouth constituency and from 1950 as part of the Penrith and The Border Constituency.
Counting of the votes for the new Penrith and Solway Constituency got underway in Workington at just after 10pm on Thursday night with 49,429 votes cast across the new Constituency. with Markus Campbell-Savours arriving at the council just after 1am.
All the boxes have now arrived at the Workington Sports Centre and verified - there have been 49,429 which is a turnout of 63.42%
The turnout like many other areas of the UK was significantly lower than previous General Elections with just 63.42% of eligible voters turning out to cast a vote.
The result was announced just before 3:30am for all eight candidates as:
