Motorists using the M6 near Penrith are being warned of potential delays and disruption from Monday morning as Junction 41 is closed for nine days
while major resurfacing work takes place on the roundabout and B5305 that crosses the M6 at junction 41.
From 7am on Monday morning, both the northbound and
southbound slip roads onto and off the M6 will be closed until 18th July as
Westmorland and Furness Council carries out planned highways resurfacing on the B5305 .
During the closure, traffic on the B5305 crossing the
motorway will be controlled by temporary traffic lights to maintain limited
access across the junction.
Drivers will be diverted via alternative routes depending on
direction of travel. Northbound and southbound traffic will be directed through
Junction 40 at Penrith, using the A66, A6, A686 and Beacon Edge through the
town. Traffic may also be routed via Junction 42 at Carlisle, using the A6
towards Penrith.
Motorists are being advised to expect delays and to allow
extra journey time, particularly during peak hours as traffic is redistributed
across already busy routes through Penrith.
The Westmorland and Furness Council highways works are being
carried out under a Section 58 notice, which prevents utility companies from
carrying out excavation work on the newly resurfaced road for a defined period
after completion.
For the Junction 41 works, a three-year Section 58
restriction will be placed on the section of road following the resurfacing
works that are taking place after United Utilities have recently completed works
to replace mains water pipes along the section of B5305.
