Green Bin Walk is rolling on the Evolve Penrith group have said despite the yellow weather warnings, The group have said after monitoring the weather forcasts they are still taking to the streets of Penrith today (Easter Saturday) — not in protest, they insist, but for a “walk” with their green garden waste bin — as opposition grows over the council’s new £60 green bin charge.
The new annual subscription fee for garden waste collection has been introduced by Westmorland and Furness Council, sparking criticism from local campaign group Evolve Penrith, who have labelled it a “green bin tax” with subscriptions to the new service having opened for households on Wednesdays 1st April.
In response, the group has organised what they describe as a light-hearted but symbolic walk, inviting residents to join them to take their green wheelie bins for a stroll through town.
The “Green Bin Walk” is taking place today (Saturday 4th April), starting from the New Squares area at around 2pm and heading to Voreda House walking through the town centre.
A spokesperson for Evolve Penrith said: "We have kept a close eye on the forecasts over the last 24 hours with the yellow weather warnings now in place but currently it looks like it will be a ok to walk the route between 2pm and 3pm without any green bins flying through the air."
"We will continue to monitor the weather up to 2pm but plan to go ahead with our walk, If anyone fancies a relaxed stroll through Penrith with or without their green wheelie bin this afternoon, feel free to join in.”
Organisers have stressed the event is informal, with no road closures or disruption expected. Participants will remain on pavements and cross roads at designated crossings.
