Five Days of A66 Full overnight Closures between Bowes to Scotch Corner carriageway start tonight

The A66 eastbound and westbound between Bowes to Scotch Corner will be fully closed overnight for the next five nights for Priority Arboricultural work to be carried out by National Highways.

Following surveys carried out earlier in the year National Highways established there are several hundred Ash trees with the condition of 'die back' making them a risk to the strategic road network.

National Highways said “We need to fell these trees, many of which were also self-seeded, ending up too close to residential properties next to the A66”.

“To remove these trees safely we'll need to close the A66 overnight”

“As this work is high priority for safety we'll need to start this process before winter sets in and poor weather prevents us completing the removal.”

The closure will be on the section of the A66 between Scotch Corner & Bowes in both directions from Monday 13 to Friday 17 October (8pm-6am).

National Highway have felled as many as possible from land next to the A66, using lane closures but have now reached the point in the removal of the trees that requires full closures as the only way they can safely remove the remaining trees as they are to close the carriageway.
