Business Steps in to Ensure Local Veterans Can Gather for Remembrance Sunday Breakfast

Penrith and Eden Armed forces veterans will gather on Sunday for breakfast before gathering to take part in the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade through the town to St Andrews Church where a service will be held.

Commemorating the sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces and of civilians in times of war Penrith Armed Force Veterans Breakfast Club are hosting a Veterans Breakfast in Penrith on Remembrance Sunday.

They are inviting veterans to come along and meet other veterans on Sunday 10th November at 10:30am at the Premier Inn Penrith in Penrith New Squares

To host a free Remembrance Sunday Breakfast for veterans the Penrith Armed Force Veterans group had been searching for funding to enable the veterans to attend the breakfast event free to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The LEO Group heard about the situation and has stepped in to ensure the Remembrance Sunday Penrith Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast could take place.

Kerryanne Wilde from the Penrith AFVBC said “When I got the message that the LEO Group were willing to make a donation to the Penrith Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club - Remembrance Breakfast this weekend, I was overwhelmed.”

“The Penrith AFVBC is a safe place where the Armed Forces community (Veterans, serving military personnel, Reservists, adult Cadet Volunteers, Spouses, Partners and dependents) can come together twice a month throughout the year and on Remembrance Sunday prior to the Penrith Town Remembrance parade.”

“This funding gives us the opportunity to thank our Armed Forces Community, and give something back, for all that they gave in service to our country.”

“I wish to thank LEO Group for this very generous donation on behalf of all those that attend our breakfast club.”

The Penrith Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club is part of a UK wide network of breakfast clubs established to facilitate veterans and serving Armed Forces personnel to meet face to face in a relaxed, safe, social environment to enjoy breakfast and banter, to combat loneliness and allow veterans to ”return to the tribe” and provide a supportive and welcoming environment for veterans of the armed forces. The clubs aim to address the welfare needs of veterans through a variety of activities and initiatives.

The welfare aims of AFVBCs include:

Social Connection: AFVBCs seek to alleviate feelings of isolation and provide veterans with a sense of belonging. They offer a social setting where veterans can meet, bond, and share their military experiences, fostering camaraderie and a sense of unity.

Peer Support: These clubs encourage open and non-judgmental discussions among veterans about their experiences, challenges, and concerns. Peer support is an essential element in helping veterans cope with the unique issues they may face, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the transition to civilian life.

Mental Health and Well-being: AFVBCs recognise the importance of mental health for veterans and work to create an atmosphere where veterans can discuss mental health issues openly. They may also provide information about mental health resources and encourage veterans to seek professional assistance if needed.

Assistance with Benefits and Services: Many veterans are entitled to various benefits and services from government agencies and non-profit organisations. AFVBCs often help veterans understand and navigate these systems, ensuring they receive the support they are entitled to, such as healthcare, disability compensation, and educational benefits.

Information Sharing: These clubs serve as a valuable source of information, sharing updates on resources, events, and opportunities that are relevant to veterans. This may include job fairs, educational programs, legal assistance, and other pertinent information.

Charitable Activities: Some AFVBCs engage in fundraising and charitable activities to support veterans in need. They may raise funds to assist veterans experiencing financial hardship or donate to local veterans' charities.

Community Engagement: AFVBCs aim to connect with their local communities and create awareness about veterans' needs and contributions. Engaging with the public helps bridge the gap between veterans and non-veterans and build a supportive network.

Advocacy: In some cases, AFVBCs may advocate for policy changes or improvements related to veterans' issues. They may work with local, state, or national organisations to raise awareness and address the challenges faced by veterans.

The Remembrance Sunday parade will form in Portland Place at 1.45pm on Sunday before setting off at 2.00pm and marching down Middlegate to St Andrews’ Church for Penrith town’s Service of Remembrance at 2.30pm.
