Annual Town Meeting hears from Penrith Bid on Plans for Pedestrian Friendly Town Centre

The annual Town meeting was held on Monday evening chaired by Penrith Mayor and chair or Penrith Town Council Cllr Doug Lawson with 18 people attending made up of representatives from organisations speaking at the meeting, along with members of the public and press.

Cllr Lawson opened the meeting at 6pm and began by answering a series of questions submitted by a resident in Penrith regarding the town council.

Cllr Lawson then introduced the guest speaker Darren Broad chair of Penrith Business Improvement District who gave a short presentation about the Penrith Bid and what they do within the town, how they work with partners and the plans they have going forward.

The Bid Chair explained how the Bid provide the town’s Christmas lights and the switch on event at Christmas and the town planters in summer and are looking to bring more events throughout the year and plan to explore the town centre as a pedestrian friendly zone and want to work with partners to do an experiment making the town centre pedestrian friendly initially on a Saturday between the hours of 10am and 4pm through the summer and link with hosting mini events to give people a reason to come into the town centre. Admitting that it would need partners to take a risk and think differently on the plans.

Following the Penrith Bid presentation Cllr Lawson introduced representatives of local organisations that have received grants and funding from the town council over the last year to explain what they do and how the grants and funding they received help them representatives from Penrith AFC, 2nd Penrith Scouts Group, Penrith Swift Group, Stomping Ground, Riverside Group thanked the town council for the funding support and explained how funding had be used to help their respective organisations.

The town meeting closed at just after 7pm with Cllr Lawson thanking all for attending the meeting held at unit 2, Church House on Friagate.
