“Mindless Vandals Risk Lives” Councillor Offers £200 Reward After A6 Road Sign Tampering Risks Live

A councillor has offered a £200 reward for information that leads to the prosecution of what the councillor has described as irresponsible mindless vandals after road signs on the busy A-road through Clifton.

30mph speed limit signs on the A6 were deliberately turned around placing the end of speed limit signage wrongly signalling to drivers that could do the national speed limit at the entrance to the village instead of the 30mph limit— a stunt branded “mindless” and “dangerous” sparking concerns that drivers unfamiliar with the road could have potentially driven into the village at 60mph onto a sharp double bend with the potential for a fatal crash, a child being struck trying to cross the road, or parked cars on the A6 being smashed into.

“This isn’t a prank. It was a potential accident waiting to happen,” ”It’s irresponsible, it’s dangerous, and it puts every single person in our community at risk.” said Cllr Davies who is offering the reward out of his own pocket.  “It’s irresponsible, it’s dangerous, and it puts every single person in our community at risk.

Tampering with road signs is a criminal offence — and if anyone had been injured or killed as a result of the tampering with the signage those responsible could have faced serious charges.

The incident is the latest in a string of anti-social acts in the area recently that are not just now putting lives at risk, but also costing taxpayers money to sort out.

Highways team from Westmorland and Furness Council respond on Sunday afternoon afternoon called out by Cllr Davies to fix the damage to the signage.

Now, a £200 reward has been put up by Cllr Davies personally to catch those responsible “We need to have a zero-tolerance approach to this kind of behaviour,” Cllr Davies added some things can be laughed off as a prank or a joke but this has crossed a line that has put our community at risk, I am sure some will think it’s an overreaction but had a child been hit or a vehicle crashed before the signage was sorted just odes not bear thinking about.”

“This is vandalism against the entire community not just a prank.”

Anyone with information is urged to speak directly to Cllr Davies or contact Cumbria Police on 101

The £200 reward offered by Cllr Davies will be paid if information leads to a successful prosecution of those involved.
