The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for thunderstorms covering most of England, including parts of Cumbria, in effect from 3pm on Saturday, June 21 until 4am on Sunday, June 22.
As temperatures continue soaring across the UK, with highs of up to 34°C expected today, particularly in eastern parts of England. The heatwave continues to intensify, with amber health warnings in place for many areas due to extreme heat.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley said:
“The highest temperatures from this hot spell are forecast for Saturday, with low 30s Celsius fairly widely across England, and up to 34°C possible in eastern areas. Despite this, the more uncomfortable heat will be in northern and western areas initially, where despite somewhat lower temperatures the air will be more humid.”
The Met Office warns that, although many areas may remain dry, scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop Saturday afternoon and evening. These storms are expected to move northeast and clear the region by the early hours of Sunday.
The most intense storms could bring:
- Frequent lightning
- Large hail
- Gusty winds
- Heavy downpours, potentially leading to surface water flooding in some areas
