Conservative MPs have used their opposition day debate in Parliament today (Wednesday, 4th December), to insist Parliament hold a vote on Labour’s controversial move for farmers to pay more inheritance tax on land.
In Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ first Budget, she announced plans for changes to agricultural property relief and business property relief leading to farmers marching on Parliament in protest to what many have said will kill family farms across the UK and threaten UK food security.
Shadow environment secretary Victoria Atkins said: “Labour’s vindictive family farm tax threatens to destroy British farming as we know it.”
MP’s debated the motion calls on the Government not to impose the cuts to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief set out in the Budget.
Penrith and Solway MP Markus Campbell-Savours spoke about the motion and the cuts to agricultural property relief outlined in the budget.
He said the decisions on the agricultural property relief was not being made to day, He added that he has spent the last few weeks listening to farmers in Penrith and Solway trying to understand the full impact of the inheritance tax proposals.
The Penrith and Solway MP then said “Let me be clear, if today was the real vote I would vote against the government’s plans. I am no rebel I am a moderate but during the election I read what I though were assurances from my party that we had no plans to introduce changes to APR on this basis I reassured farmers in my constituency that we would not and now I am simply no prepared to break my word”
