New Wave of Businesses Brings Optimism to Penrith High Street

Penrith has faced a wave of high street closures over the last year following the exit of two major banks from the town centre, but optimism is returning to the town as new businesses start to take up vacant retail units in Penrith.

Over the last week, two new shops have opened in the town centre.
Clubrackets.com has relocated its specialist sporting goods store from Carlisle to Penrith. Offering a range of rackets for sports from tennis to paddle, the shop hopes its new location in the heart of Cumbria will make it the go-to destination for anyone looking to purchase a new racket.

Also opening this week is Lily Rah, a new gifts and home store on Devonshire Street, offering a range of gifts and lifestyle items for the home.

Further activity underway across the town. Work has begun on a new pasta and pizza food outlet in New Squares, and Penrith’s third Greggs opened its doors today at the Morrisons petrol station.

Commercial property agents Edwin Thompson have also confirmed that the former chemist on Middlegate has had a lease signed this week by a new business set to move into the town centre unit in the new year.

Although the town is currently experiencing a fresh wave of new business openings, early 2026 is forecast to bring further closures, with more long-established Penrith businesses expected to leave the high street.
