New traffic lights are planned to be installed on a main road through Penrith with a property developer and Westmorland and Furness Council working together to install a ‘Toucan Crossing’ on the A6 - Scotland Road near the junction with the Penny Hill Park.
A ‘Toucan Crossing’ is a crossing designed for both pedestrians and cyclists to use with traffic lights used as the method to stop traffic at the crossing point that is wider than normal crossing with separate lanes across the road for both pedestrians and cyclists to use with cyclists allowed to ride across the crossing.
The new Toucan Crossing to be installed as part of a Section 278 Agreement in place between Atkinsons Building Contractors Ltd and the Westmorland and Furness Council as part of a developer agreement linked to the palling approval for the 67-affordable home built of Inglewood Road with the crossing part of measures to promote active travel for those living in the properties and the wider community.
A section 278 agreement is a section of the Highways Act 1980 that allows developers to enter into a legal agreement with the council to make permanent alterations or improvements to a public highway, as part of a planning approval.
Westmorland and Furness Council have issued a public notice that will enable the crossing to be install on the A6 over the next few months.
Westmorland and Furness Council is also introducing a 40mph speed reduction on Inglewood Road ahead of plans for a new substantial housing development on land of Inglewood Road progressing by other developers.
