Councillors Vote to Refuse Planning Permission for 5 Homes Despite Impassioned Speech by Applicant

The Westmorland and Furness Council Eden area planning committee on Wednesday meeting at Penrith Town Hall refused local builder planning permission to build 5 homes on Beacon Edge.

Despite an Impassioned speech to the planning committee by the applicant Mr Atkinson who highlighted that his business has building over 500 affordable homes and being a Penrith born and bred local resident and business owner.

Council planning officer maintained the position that the site was outside Penrith and “rural” and recommended it for refusal.

The application had come before the planning committee for consideration after Penrith North Westmorland and Furness Councillor and Town Councillor Mark Rudhall called in the application to go before the planning committee saying “I would like to object to the proposed development and I would like this to go to a committee decision and not delegated to officers. I think the previous application was objected to as it was felt that the area lies outside of the town of Penrith. However, this application is now for 5 properties, and I feel this is an over development of the site.”

The refusal for the 5 houses came as the news broke that a meeting of the Westmorland and Furness Strategic planning committee to be held in Kendal next Wednesday will see plans for a development of 194 houses in Penrith approved on officer’s recommendations with no Penrith councillors on the committee.
