Council leaders are meeting in Carlisle and Kendal this morning to make the final decision on giving consent to government plans to create a combined authority for Cumbria with a directly elected Cumbria Mayor.
The Westmorland and Furness Council cabinet is meeting at Kendal town hall to debate and vote on granting consent of the Unitary council to government with a deadline of the 19th October for granting consent by both councils.
Cllr Brook leader of Westmorland and Furness Council said in presenting the agenda item to cabinet said the consent decision had risks but also offers opportunity for Cumbria."
He then recommended to the cabinet that they confirm consent to the making of a Cumbria combined authority and a mayor elected in May 2027.
Members of the council cabinet at Westmorland and Furness Council and the Executive of Cumberland Council are now debating the item and will in the next hour vote on the future of Local Government in Cumbria.
