Westmorland and Furness Council has appointed a design firm based in Carlisle to develop plans for redevelopment of Castle park as part of what the council hopes will see funding to redevelop the park attracted from the Borderlands Fund and other grant funding sources.
The council awarded the £35,814 contract earlier this month to Carlisle based Architect Plus (UK) Ltd to deliver designs for Castle Park with a costed and phased development plan scheme designs that will be used to support the council Borderland Place plan for the Penrith Castle Park Restoration and Improvement Project and support a National Lottery Heritage funding application and other funding bids.
The Borderlands Place Plan was created by a group made up of Westmorland and Furness Council, Penrith Town Council, Penrith BiD and Penrith Chamber of Trade.
The Borderland Place plan will see £3million in Borderlands funding deliver projects in the town on projects decided by the Penrith Borderlands group.
As the council plans emerge another new group has formed separately calling itself the Friends of Castle Park with members of the town council and others it claims to agree on a pathway toward securing a bright future for the park.
The first meeting of the group was held in November following the meeting a spokesperson said, "Friends of Castle Park discussed the options of either lobbying for the Unitary Authority to implement a comprehensive development plan or undertake research into the prospects of a community-led approach.” The meeting unanimously voted for the latter option.
Two projects have now been approved from the Penrith Place Plan for Borderlands Funding with Penrith Station and Penrith Playhouse approved. The Penrith Station project has been awarded £476,000 with the project total costs of £1.036m to support improvements within the concourse and the station buildings.
Westmorland and Furness Council have been approached for comment on their plans for Castle Park.
