At a meeting of Westmorland and Furness Council Full Council today (4 November) held for the first time by the council in Kendal Town hall following the closure of County Hall.
Westmorland and Furness Council Deputy Leader Councillor Andrew Jarvis announced two new Cabinet members and some minor changes in Cabinet responsibilities.
The Cabinet changes are as a result of the resignation of Councillor Neil Hughes as a Cabinet member. Councillor Hughes is planning to move to France early in 2025 to live full time in a property he has owned in the south of France for a number of years.
He is expected to resign as ward councillor for Eamont and Shap in early 2025.
Councillor Jarvis thanked Councillor Hughes for his tireless work during his time on Cabinet and in particular his work advocating for public transport.
The two new Cabinet members (and their responsibilities) are:
•Councillor Helen Chaffey, Cabinet member for Customer Services, Organisational Culture and Communications
•Councillor John Murray, Cabinet member for Transport and Regulatory Services
Councillor Chaffey, who is a councillor for the Kent Estuary ward, will oversee the council’s work around customer services, human resources and organisational development, health and safety, equality, diversity and inclusion, refugees and asylum seekers and communications.
Councillor Murray, who represents Kirkby Stephen and Tebay, will be responsible for transport, including buses, cycling, active travel, public rights of way and countryside access, as well as environmental health, food hygiene, public protection, trading standards, licensing, registrars, coroners and bereavement services.
Other minor changes to Cabinet responsibilities announced at today’s meeting are:
•Councillor Andrew Jarvis will now have responsibility for council assets included as part of his responsibilities as Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Finance
•Councillor Giles Archibald will now have responsibility for street scene services as part of his Cabinet portfolio for Climate, Biodiversity and Environmental Services
All other Cabinet members and responsibilities remain unchanged:
Councillor Jonathan Brook - Council Leader and Cabinet member for Economy
Councillor Patricia Bell – Cabinet member for Adult Care
Councillor Janet Battye – Cabinet member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills
Councillor Virginia Taylor – Cabinet member for Sustainable Communities and Localities
Councillor Peter Thornton – Cabinet member for Highways and ICT
Councillor Judith Derbyshire – Cabinet member for Housing and Community Safety
Westmorland and Furness Council cabinet members get an additional allowance of £13,000 a year in addition to their standard councillor allowance of £13,500.
with the leader getting an additional allowance of £26,000 and the deputy leader £15,600.
