Carlisle Man Arrested After Penrith Shoplifting Spree Brought To An End By The Power Of Shopwatch Radios

A Carlisle man has been arrested and charged with five shoplifting offences after a suspected shoplifting spree in Penrith was brought to an end with the help of the town’s Shopwatch radio network.

The incident unfolded yesterday after staff at Penrith Train Station raised the alarm over suspected shoplifting in the area via Shopwatch radio.

Members of the Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team began enquiries, with other local retailers also joining in and assisting officers with the search for the suspect.

The search was eventually brought to an end when a member of the Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team spotted the suspect at McDonald’s in Penrith. The man was subsequently arrested.

Further enquiries were carried out at a number of stores, with assistance from response officers.

Police have since confirmed that a male from the Carlisle area has been charged with five shoplifting offences.

A quantity of goods was also recovered and will be returned to the stores.

The incident highlights the power of Penrith’s Shopwatch network, with retailers and police able to quickly share information and work together to identify and locate a suspected offender.

With staff raising the initial alert, retailers assisting with the search and police eventually locating the suspect, the Shopwatch network once again proved its value in helping tackle crime in Penrith.
