A66 Week of Overnight Full Closures to Install Average Speed Cameras Start Tonight

National Highways will be putting full overnight closures in place on the A66 overnight between midnight and 6am from tonight (Tuesday 5th May) through until the 9th May to allow for the installation of average speed cameras along the section of A66 between M6 junction 40 and Temple Sowerby.

This installation was scheduled to take place later in the year but is being brought forward by National Highways in response to concerns the 40mph speed limit on the section of A66 through the ongoing works isn't being adhered to by everyone.

To install the cameras safely, National Highways will be closing the A66 in both directions between Kemplay roundabout and Temple Sowerby from 12midnight to 6am from 5-9 May 2026.

In addition, National Highways will also close one lane of the westbound A66 from Kemplay roundabout to M6 junction 40 on Friday 8 May between 8pm and 5pm.

Emergency access will be retained throughout the closure but for all other traffic there will be a fully signed diversion in place.

Due to existing HGV restrictions through Kirkby Stephen, heavy goods vehicles will be diverted via the M6, A69, and A1.

The diversion between M6 Junction 40 and the A1 at Scotch Corner is 185 km. Signage will be in place ahead of these points to ensure drivers are informed.
