96% of Westmorland and Furness children secure place at first preference primary school

96.07% per cent of Westmorland and Furness resident pupils have been offered their first-choice Primary school for this September, figures released today confirm.

Of 1732 applicants across the Local Authority applying for primary school places in September 2026, 1664 were allocated their first preference meaning that 99.4 per cent were offered either their first, second or third preference school.

Milorad Vasic, Director of Children's Services at Westmorland and Furness Council said:

"Starting school is an exciting step, so I'm really pleased that so many of our children have received a place at one of their preferred schools. We remain dedicated to working with our schools to ensure they have access to all appropriate support from the start and that the children's educational journey brings them joy and a love of learning"

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council's cabinet member for Children's Services, Education and Skills, said:

"It's excellent news that the vast majority of pupils have been offered a place at their first‑preference school. We're grateful to our schools for their continued support and for working closely with families to ensure the Local Authority received as many on‑time applications as possible. I wish every child starting primary school in September 2026 great happiness and success."

Parents and carers have been informed of their allocated school via email or letter, depending on their preference. However, they are advised to contact Westmorland and Furness School Admissions Team at school.admissions@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk if they have any queries.

Parents and carers who have not been offered places for their children at their first preference school are being provided with information about how to lodge an appeal.

Where applications were received late, these will be processed from 7 May 2026, with parents informed of the outcome as soon as possible after that.
