Two men are in custody tonight after a rapid police pursuit ended with their vehicle being stopped on the A66, barely fifteen minutes after £200 worth of alcohol was reported stolen from a Penrith shop.
Police received the call at 14:38 from staff at a town centre store, who reported that two males had left the premises without paying for a significant quantity of alcohol. Within three minutes, officers had launched ANPR checks, identifying a suspect vehicle heading eastbound on the A66.
At 14:52, an Eden response officer intercepted the vehicle. One minute later, at 14:53, the car was forced to stop and both men were arrested at the roadside. All stolen goods were recovered, and the vehicle—believed to be used for repeated thefts—was seized.
The pair are currently being transported to Carlisle Custody for questioning. Police confirmed they intend to apply to have the driver’s licence removed by the courts, preventing him from travelling to Cumbria to commit further offences.
